Every month the Administrative/Professional (A/P) Council highlights an A/P staff member through a series of questions as another way for the Illinois State community to connect. This month readers can get to know Chuck Scott, interim associate vice president for Facilities Management, Planning, and Operations.

As interim associate vice president, what do you do?

The respective departments reporting to me are responsible for design, development, maintenance, and operations for the entire campus physical portfolio including all buildings, grounds, and parking areas. My specific role involves coordinating the efforts of each of these departments and communicating projects and plans with the entire campus.

How long have you been an employee at ISU?

I started at ISU as the superintendent of grounds in December 1985, thus over 31 years.

What do you love most about working at ISU?

Without a doubt it is the people I have opportunity to interact with each and every day.  I have a unique opportunity here and try very hard to reach out to our various campus constituents on a regular basis. I have built some very strong personal relationships with many people on campus and throughout the community. These friendships are truly valuable and could have only become possible through my employment at ISU.

What is one fact about yourself that might surprise people?

I am actually very introverted. My work and public life is critical to the position I hold.  I recharge my batteries with occasional “Chuck Time” listening to music, boating, gardening, or spending time with my best friend…Vicky, my wife of 42 years.

When you’re not working, what are you most likely doing?

We have two beautiful granddaughters, one in town and one in Indianapolis.  I find a lot of my time away from the office spending time with them.  It is pretty special to see young lives develop, and it is wonderful to have the opportunity to be with them during their formidable years.

What is your favorite spot on campus?

That’s easy…it is Fell Arboretum.  My answer may trick some people.  You see, actually the entire campus is designated as Fell Arboretum, while many think it is only the Quad.  So, my answer is, I truly enjoy the entire campus.  Being here so long has allowed me to intimately know every building and every tree.  This is a special place in my life.

If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what food would it be?

My son told me once that if there is only one soup on a menu, you should order it because it conveys a sense of confidence in the chef.  So, soups are a favorite, and so is pizza, it can have so many different toppings.  Ever had a pizza soup?
