Illinois traditionally outpaces the nation with high numbers of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs), frequently ranking among the top five states with the most new NBCTs. Chicago Public Schools rank second in top districts with 2,196 NBCTs. To date, there are 6,051 NBCTs in Illinois.
Illinois continues to progress in advancing National Board Certification with the announcement of the NEW Illinois National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) in 2016. This year, the state ranked sixth nationwide with the total number of NBCTs over time (6,051). National Board certification identifies qualified teachers as leaders in their field. Completion of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) Certification process signifies that these teachers have developed and demonstrated the skills required of an accomplished education professional. The NBPTS has also announced that more than 3,384 teachers have successfully met the standards to renew their certification for National Board Certification in 2016. One hundred and seventy-two of those NBCTs are Illinois teachers. By successfully completing the renewal process for certification, these outstanding teachers continue to meet the nation’s highest teaching standards. They continue to be among the tens of thousands of NBCTs who are a part of this country’s education reform movement focusing on ensuring that every student has access to an accomplished teacher. More than a decade of research confirms that students taught by Board-certified teachers learn more than students taught by other teachers.
