Ali Riaz of Politics and Government was quoted in the New York Times for his expertise on the Islamist politics of Bangladesh and surrounding areas.
In a story titled “Rohingya militants vow to fight Myanmar despite disastrous cost,” published September 17, Riaz helps to explain the rise of a fledgling insurgency: “the presence of legitimate discontent, despair, and discontent among hundreds and thousands of people, growing radicalization of a movement, asymmetry of forces engaged in the conflict and a religious dimension to the crisis all provide a conducive environment.”
