Volunteerism is an inherent part of the Redbird spirit. Members of the Illinois State community donate their time, talents, and resources to help those in need in the Bloomington-Normal area and all over the world. With the SECA campaign now underway, Illinois State faculty and staff have the chance to monetarily donate to a wide variety of organizations. However, financial support is not the only option if you are looking to give back.

The office of Health Promotion and Wellness is partnering with the American Heart Association to host this walk for the third time in the last five years. Erin Link, coordinator of communication and marketing for Health Promotion and Wellness, recognizes the large number of families affected by heart disease and the importance of participation in the walk. “Activity is a crucial part of a healthy lifestyle. This event is a fun, family-friendly way to get moving and improve well-being,” said Link, whose team, the Nutty Wellness Warriors, are excited to participate in the walk once again.

Students from the School of Kinesiology and Recreation will lead warmups and stretching before the walk begins, and teams composed of Illinois State students and employees are raising money and walking in support of this important cause. One such group, Buds for Beth, is walking in memory of Beth Turner, a longtime employee of University Advancement who passed away from a heart attack.

Although the term ‘giving’ is often synonymous with donating money, there are different opportunities for Redbirds to give back and volunteer for the greater good. The McLean County Heart and Stroke Walk is still accepting participants; register or join an ISU team here.

Those University employees who wish to donate to the American Heart Association or American Stroke Association through this year’s SECA campaign can visit the website. SECA allows all state employees to donate to local, state, national, and international charities that have been vetted through the state and supports nearly 2,000 charities. One hundred percent of contributions are sent directly to the designated charities. The campaign runs through November 8.
