The Department of Psychology will present an informal discussion session titled, “A History of Psychology: The First 50 Years,” Thursday, October 19 at the Ewing Cultural Center. Refreshments and light hors d’oeuvres will be available starting at 6:00 p.m. and will be followed by a presentation and discussion facilitated by Professor Mark Swerdlik, Ph.D. at 7:00.
Abstract
Prior to 1967, psychology was part of the Department of Education and Psychology. The fall of 1967 marked the beginning of psychology as an independent department and the first class of Department of Psychology undergraduate and graduate student alumni.
The evening will include a presentation and discussion of the history of the department from 1967 to the present and will include a focus on the early history as well as faculty and student accomplishments over the past half-century. Discussion will include recollections from all in attendance including former department chairs and emeritus faculty.

Fun picture. I had Ed. Psy. with Bill Gnagey. There was an old wood desk at the front of the classroom and he walked in the first day of class and gave it kick. The desk collapsed with two legs falling off. He looked a little sheepish and commented, “The first thing you have to do is get the attention of students.” So true.
