Rhonda Dugan of California State University, Bakersfield

Rhonda Dugan of California State University, Bakersfield, will present “‘Yeah, Cuz Everybody Uses It’: College Student Use and Interpretation of the N-Word” at 11:30 a.m. Friday, October 13, in Schroeder Hall 104. The talk is part of the Sociology and Anthropology Research Series.

In her research, Dugan conducted a series of interviews with students from different racial-ethnic backgrounds who attend university in the San Joaquin Valley region of California. Her work uncovered “intriguing patterns among interviewees that vary by racial-ethnic background for use/nonuse” of the N-word. Dugan will discuss how students employ strategies to manage where, when, why, how, and with whom they say the word.
