Fall 2017 is the ninth semester that students in Associate Professor Susan Hildebrandt’s World Language Teaching in the K-12 Setting (LAN 320) have taught French, German, or Spanish lessons to K-fifth-graders at Unity Community Center in Normal.

Members of the class were honored with a certificate of appreciation on November 21 at a Unity Gives Thanks reception. Hildebrandt was also awarded a certificate of appreciation the same night. Four students and Hildebrandt attended the holiday reception during which Unity youth entertained the audience with after-dinner songs, drumming, and dances.

While teaching at Unity, Languages, Literatures, and Cultures students are able to immediately put the concepts they study in classes into practice. The Illinois State University language teaching program at Unity was also recognized for an ACTFL Global Engagement Initiative award in 2015.
