University Galleries’ Kendra Paitz curates Miami exhibit

University Galleries’ Kendra Paitz is leaving her mark on a beach in Miami. The senior curator at the gallery recently curated a selection of work that appears on Bal Harbour’s beachwalk through February. The public path features three annual exhibitions organized by the city’s art program, Unscripted, in collaboration with top cultural institutions from around the country.

“Unscripted Bal Harbour Curator Claire Breukel wanted to feature Carrie Schneider’s Reading Women and invited me to curate the selection of works and participate in programming,” said Paitz, who has worked extensively with Schneider, and curated her first large-scale museum survey exhibition that was on view at University Galleries in 2015.

For this exhibition, images from Schneider’s Reading Women series were reproduced on outdoor signs and installed along the path in the Bal Harbour section of Miami. Schneider is a New York-based artist who photographed and filmed 100 women in their own homes and studios as each read a book of her choice by a female writer. “Reading Women resulted in portraits and a film that show the period during which each reader was the most immersed in her text,” said Paitz.

Unscripted Bal Harbour partners with different organizations—in this case, University Galleries—to organize outdoor exhibitions along their beach path as well as related programming. Schneider and Paitz led an exhibition tour and had a public discussion about Reading Women as well as taking part in a book signing for Schneider’s University Galleries-published monograph, Nine Trips Around the Sun.
