One of the few people to survive a suicide attempt off the Golden Gate Bridge will be the speaker for 2018 Social Work Day. Kevin Hines will lead a discussion on mental health on Monday, March 26, at Illinois State University’s Alumni Center. The event will run from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Under the theme, Dimensions of Resiliency, social work advocates from across the state will have the opportunity to discuss the various issues related to mental health. The public is invited, but registration is required. For those attending the workshop for continuing education units (CEUs), there is a cost of $40.  

Hines is an award-winning activist, storyteller, and filmmaker. He turned his tragedy into a talk of hope and resilience to inspire others. Find out more about his work.

Hines is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Clifford W. Beers award for his effort to improve the lives of and attitudes toward people with mental illnesses. He has also received the Achievement Winner award by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and received more than 30 U.S. military excellence medals as a civilian. Through his work, Hines wishes to spread the message of living mentally healthy around the globe.

The event will also include panel discussions with current and former students and social workers on their personal narratives about maintaining resiliency in the face of difficult conditions.
