The Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Clinic, part of the Eckelmann-Taylor Speech and Hearing Clinic, is committed to bringing specialized tinnitus and hyperacusis management to our patients. Approximately 10 to 15 percent of the population experiences tinnitus (ringing, humming, or buzzing in the ears or head) on a regular basis. When tinnitus and/or reduced sound tolerance negatively affects one’s life and day-to-day functioning, it is important to seek medical attention. Illinois State University’s Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Clinic provides comprehensive diagnostic services as well as patient-centered treatment plans.

Led by Alyssa Seeman, the Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Clinic (THC) provides clinical experiences in this specialized area of patient care to our Doctor of Audiology students and learning opportunities for undergraduate students in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Graduate students may be assigned a semester rotation in the THC where they will learn how to obtain thorough case histories, use appropriate questionnaires and handicap scales, complete comprehensive assessments including tinnitus matching and masking measurements, counsel and educate patients, and develop treatment plans that include sound therapy and other appropriate recommendations based on individual patient needs, preferences, and goals. Undergraduate students can seek experiences in the THC through clinical observations and independent study projects with Seeman.
