Every month the Administrative/Professional (A/P) Council highlights an A/P staff member through a series of questions as another way for the Illinois State community to connect. This month readers can get to know Mary Jo Fabich, associate director of University College.

As associate director for University College, what do you do?

I coordinate orientation programs for new Illinois State students. This includes Preview for freshmen and Transfer Days for transfers. I also coordinate events in University College like the UC retreat.

How long have you been an employee at Illinois State?

27 years

What do you love the most about working at Illinois State?

Running orientation programs, I work with virtually every department on campus. I love my job because the people on this campus collaborate very well. Working together, we deliver effective, informative and welcoming orientations. The focus is on doing what is best for our students and their families.

What is one fact about yourself that might surprise people?

Since my own freshman orientation in 1978, I have spent every summer involved in orientation programs. With Preview 2018, that makes 40 consecutive summers in orientation. I’m happy I found my path early on!

When you’re not working, what are you most likely doing?

I like to go out to dinner with my husband. I also like walking and reading.

What is your favorite spot on campus?

I love being in my third floor office and looking out the window at the Quad on a nice day. Students are everywhere and doing all kinds of things. Students are such interesting people. I guess that’s why I love working on a campus.

Who was your favorite teacher/professor in school, and how did he/she impact you?

Mrs. Black, my first-grade teacher. She believed in every student in her class. She instilled in me my love of reading. She had a positive and humorous approach that made school magical.
