The 2018 Summer Reading Challenge kicked off on May 15. Check out this brief bonus episode of CTLT’s podcast, Let’s Talk Teaching, with details about the challenge:

The Challenge

Many of us make ambitious plans to read over the summer—with mixed results. It can be difficult deciding just what to read and finding the time to finish what we start. CTLT and Milner Library want to help you reach your reading ambitions. The 2018 Summer Reading Challenge is designed to expand the scope of your summer reading through shared experiences with like-minded faculty, staff members, and graduate students. It promotes summer reading by tying it to a community… and by offering some rewards for completing your reading at summer’s end.

The Goals

  • Create a community of people interested in reading about and discussing the craft of teaching
  • Foster cross-disciplinary conversations about teaching
  • Encourage participants to read three books related to teaching outside of the genres they would normally consider

How It Works

Each participant will select three teaching-related books to read over the summer from the categories fiction, nonfiction, and memoir/biographical. Participants will use Goodreads to share their thoughts on three books. This is a private group for Illinois State participants only—learn more and log in using your @ilstu.edu email address.

Participants who complete their reading goals and shared insights with the community will receive a dining certificate at the Summer Reading Challenge Roundup on Friday, August 24. Use your certificate to have lunch with another participant and talk about a book!
