The Board of Trustees of Illinois State University recently authorized a new academic degree. The Board approved the master in business education degree within the Department of Marketing in Illinois State’s College of Business.

“We are excited that the Illinois State University Board of Trustees has approved the MSBE and forwarded the application to the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) for consideration. This has been a long process, and when approved by the state will offer K-12 teachers a way to enhance their content knowledge and advance their teaching skills. The program will also allow business professionals who want to teach a pathway to earn the necessary credentials to teach at some community colleges or with a few additional undergraduate courses, earn a teaching license for the K-12 classroom.” said Tamra Davis, associate professor of Business Education.

Illinois State is the only public university in the state with an active undergraduate degree program in business teacher preparation. The new master’s program will serve to further strengthen business education for elementary and secondary school teachers. The program will also provide credentials for teaching business education courses at community colleges and lower-division business education courses offered by four-year institutions.

In addition to courses in the College of Business, the program will include courses taught by the School of Teaching and Learning and the Department of Educational Administration and Foundations in the College of Education.
