Milner Library has more to offer than just great study spaces, class resources, and group collaboration areas. At the start of the fall 2018 semester, it will also be home to four exhibits.

“The exhibitions on view in Milner Library present insightful perspectives on collaboration, community building, and diverse understandings of place and human experience,” said Kathleen Lonbom, head of the exhibit’s committee at Milner Library.

“Documentation of life and art after Hurricane Maria; photographic explorations of the Illinois State campus; the social, economic, and cultural lives of South Asia; and the intersection of literary form as art are represented in the exhibitions on display. Each reflects a meaningful learning experience for library users and visitors to engage with!”

Puerto Rico: Reinforcing a sense of place through art after the hurricane

Floor 2 Café area
August 20–September 30

School of Art graduate student, Mary Beth Breshears, led mural projects, photographed, and participated in relief efforts in Puerto Rico this summer. The exhibit highlights the coming together of people to rebuild a community in Patillas, Puerto Rico, after hurricane Maria.

Her photographs tell a story of strength, resilience, and the reinforcement of a sense of place after the natural disaster. Each photograph is a moment of pause that allows for the realization and awareness of our own emotions.  They allow for an understanding of how art can transform a space and brighten the lives of the people in a community.

Life, learning, and healing: Candor Arts exhibition

Floor 6
August 16–October 14

Candor Arts is an independent art book publisher based in Chicago. While the spectrum of media published varies widely—from memoir to photography, from dance collectives to poets—the authors are making work rooted in lived experiences and offering perspectives in how they have healed or what they have learned. Working closely in collaboration, each edition is driven by the author’s vision and the books and objects are produced mostly by hand in the Candor Arts studio. Each project is approached equitably, in that the author and publisher equally split all financial responsibilities of production, as well as the profit of each edition. To create as little financial risk for the author as possible, it is typical for Candor Arts to front the production costs and the authors and artists pay their share through book sales. This collection of books consists of everything Candor Arts has published in the two years that they have been in operation.

Milner Library, in partnership with University Galleries and the Harold K. Sage Fund, sponsors this exhibition and presentation.

Redbird meets South Asia

Floor 3 Digital Wall
August 10–September 28

This digital display features the student work of Dr. Sudipa Topdar’s spring 2018 History 104 Introduction to Indian Civilization course.

The students were asked to explore the social, economic, and cultural lives of South Asia. Stop by the third floor of Milner Library to view six different presentations.

View Finder

Floor 2
June 5–August 30

This selection of Lyndsie Schlink’s digital photographs highlights her background in both fine art photography and photojournalism. Shot during her career as the Senior Photographer at Illinois State University, the photos in View Finder convey her composition and framing skills, her capability of story-telling through images, and practice of using minimal post-production image editing. While widely published in digital and print formats, View Finder presents her work, for just the second time, solely as individual, stand-alone photographs.
