Bailey Lushina is an interior design major in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. She was selected for the Washington, D.C., 2018 summer internship with living costs covered by College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST). This gave her the opportunity to intern at IA Interior Architects over the last summer.
The best part of the experience….
“It is hard to choose what the best part of my summer internship was, but I would have to say the confidence it gave me in myself. I went there not knowing if I could do it or if I was qualified but I learned my worth and what I bring to the table. I have a newfound confidence in myself that is priceless and I will walk into the next job I have knowing that I am capable.”
What I got up to during my summer internship….
“I worked nine hours minimum every day at IA Interior Architects and most days more than that. Occasionally, I would work up to thirteen hours. It was very busy and they treated me as an employee, not an intern, which I appreciated very much. While I was there I worked mainly on two projects, both of them were government projects and my day to day depended on what deadlines were coming up. In a nutshell I did renderings, worked on construction documents, did space calculations, programming and space planning.”
Living in Washington, D.C., over the summer….
“I loved living in the city, it was like living in a big city with a small town feel. My favorite thing to do was to go do things with my friends. I loved watching the fireworks on the fourth of July, since all my housemates worked for congressmen I got to sit on the capitol steps.”
“It was not my first time in Washington D.C., but the only other time I went I was twelve and it was only for a week so this experience was much different than that one.”
Advice to prospective applicants….
“Find a job you really love! I loved working for IA, they were my dream company to work for. I can’t imagine it would have been as impactful if I had found an internship that had me getting coffees. When an applicant is looking for a job they should remember that they are not the only ones being interviewed. It is a conversation and they should also be interviewing the potential employer in a sense to make sure it is the right fit for them, and not take it just because it is the first job that they find.”
