Immigration will be the theme of the Fall 2018 International Seminar Series. This series, which is free and open to the public, will take place at noon on Wednesdays in various locations in the Bone Student Center throughout the semester.

The first speaker of the series will be Shirley Steinberg, the Werklund Research Professor of Critical Youth Studies at the University of Calgary, Canada. She will present “It’s Not About Ego: Authentic Community Engagement with New Americans” on Wednesday, September 5, in the Bone Student Center Prairie Room. Steinberg will also present for the Speaker Series at Illinois State University the evening of September 4.

Steinberg will explore the ways in which people engage and consider migration, immigration, and refugees as countries welcome newcomers.

Steinberg is the author and editor of many books in critical pedagogy and cultures, urban and youth culture, critical qualitative research, and cultural studies. She is the organizer of the International Institute of Critical Pedagogy and Transformative Leadership, and is committed to a global community of transformative educators and community workers engaged in radical love, social justice, and the situating of power within social and cultural contexts, specifically involving youth. Her most recent book is 2018’s Activists Under 30:  Global Youth, Social Justice, and Good Work.

Information about the seminar series can be found on the Office of International Studies and Programs website.

The International Seminar Series offers the Illinois State campus and Bloomington-Normal community weekly opportunities to learn about a wide range of international topics. Guest speakers are experts in their fields across a range of disciplines who cover a wide array of cultural, historical, political, and social topics.
