October 6 marked the first tailgate recycling initiative of the 2018 season held by the Illinois State University Office of Sustainability and sponsored by the Student Sustainability Committee. Although the weather was less than desirable and kept many tailgaters away, the group was excited and grateful to see how readily the Redbird tailgaters took on the challenge to recycle during their time before the game.

Members of staff from the office walked around the lots handing recycling bags to tailgaters. They briefly explained what these bags were to be used for and where they could leave them when they were done. They then explained that if the tailgaters used the bag, they would receive a free coffee cup to show appreciation for their participation. These cups were then handed out a few hours later to those who clearly used their recycling bags during the event.

The group will be running the event again on October 27 during the Family Weekend tailgate. Be sure to look out for the team passing out recycling bags and do not hesitate to ask them any questions you may have. Illinois State student-athletes will be volunteering with the team so make sure to talk to them about their upcoming team events! The group will also be offering an added incentive of an ultimate Illinois State fan giveaway which will include lots of Redbird goodies, and this will be offered to the tailgaters that use the recycling bags throughout their event. Thank you, Redbirds, and keep up the good work!
