Honors
Ani Yazedjian, FCS, received a one-year supplemental award of $235,761 from the Department of Health and Human Sciences (HHS) to provide additional job readiness training to students enrolled in a currently funded HHS grant entitled Champaign Area Relationship Education for Youth (CARE4U).

Performances
David Collier
, MUS, performed as timpanist with the Heartland Festival Orchestra and with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra in September.

Amy Gilreath, MUS, performed at the Santiago de Cuba Jazz Festival in September.  While there she performed in two jazz combo concerts at the Hotel Melia and the Santiago Musicians Union House, and with a big band made up of American and Cuban musicians.

Kevin Hart, MUS, and his Vibe Tribe and Trio performed at various venues during the summer and early fall, including the CEFCU Stage Summer Jazz Series, Medici Craft Beer and Jazz Street Fair, and with Jive Bag in an opening show for well-known New Orleans-based blues performer Marcia Ball at the UIUC Research Park.

Maria Ostendorf Smith
and Fred H. Smith, ANT, were the keynote speakers at the 22nd European meeting of the Paleopathology Association held in Zagreb, Croatia.  The title of their talk was “Neandertal Paleopathology: A Tentative Synthesis.”

Willard Bohn, LAN emeritus, published a book titled Propellers, a translation of a book of poetry in Spanish by Guillermo de Torre (San Diego State University Press). It is Bohn’s 19th book.

Christopher Breu, ENG, published the chapter “Debt and Sensuality” in The Debt Age (Routledge). He also contributed “The Humanities as Contradiction: Against the New Enclosures” in the special issue “Saving the Humanities from the Neoliberal University” in Humanities Volume 7, Number 3; and “Embodied Ecologies and Metafictional Musings” for The Goose: A Journal of Arts, Environment and Culture in Canada Volume 17, Number 1.

Karen Coats, ENG, published “Lacanian Psychoanalytic Criticism” in A Companion to Literary Theory.

Phillip M. Hash, MUS, published “Tournaments of the Michigan State Band Association: 1877-1884” in the October 2018 issue of the Journal of Historical Research in Music Education.
