A Union Pacific train passes through the Town of Normal

Town of Normal railroad safety tips

This fall, there have been numerous occurrences of standing trains blocking intersections and crossings. In the event that a train is stalled on the tracks, pedestrians should consider using the Main Street or School Street underpasses, or utilizing the services of Connect Transit. Please adhere to the following railroad safety tips at all times.

• Cross tracks ONLY at designated pedestrian or roadway crossings. Look both ways before crossing, and always observe warning signals.
• Pedestrians should NEVER consider crawling under standing trains or climbing between train cars in order to cross the tracks. This is illegal and could lead to serious injury if the train should start to suddenly move.
• There are two tracks. Even if one train is stopped, there may be another train approaching.
• Stop when signals begin to flash. Pedestrians, bicyclists, and vehicles should not proceed until warning lights stop flashing and the crossing gates are up.
• Do not wear headphones around railroad tracks, as they may keep you from hearing an oncoming train.
• Do not try to beat an approaching train. It may be closer and traveling faster than it appears.
• Walking on railroad tracks is both hazardous and illegal. Violators are subject to a fine.
• Stand further back from the tracks while a train is passing in order to avoid being hit by debris.
