The Big Jobs of Small-Town Principals  Today, research suggests that school leadership can have a profound impact on student learning. But as school leaders’ jobs have expanded, training and support haven’t kept pace, and many of these administrators struggle to make time to oversee instruction. (Hechinger Report)

State Information Request: State-Level Equity Officers  A state department of education staff member asked for information on how states are using equity officers, as well as their responsibilities. The response included examples of state-level offices dedicated to equity and/or diversity and additional resources.

North Central College receives record-setting $3.2M grant from Kern Family Foundation  North Central College has been awarded a $3.2 million grant— the largest private grant in the institution’s 157-year history—from the Kern Family Foundation to develop principals and teachers who foster “cultures of character” in their schools. A framework for building cultures of character in schools will be infused in the College’s master of education in educational leadership degree with eligibility for principal endorsement and through the creation of a Character Education Institute—anchored by North Central’s long-established campus-wide Leadership, Ethics and Values (LEV) program and the recently launched Center for Social Impact (CSI).

Fall 2018 Partnership for Educator Preparation Progress Report Now Available  Check out the latest PEP Progress Report for fall 2018. ISBE’s goal is to ensure every student in the state is supported by highly effective teachers. ISBE, in conjunction with the Partnership for Educator Preparation (PEP) Steering Committee, has embarked on a significant program to strengthen data collection, sharing and reporting to continuously improve educator preparation programs and better serve our students.
