It’s that time of the year! The College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST) is proud to announce Science and Technology Week 2019, aimed at celebrating advancements in science and technology. This edition is filled with activities recognizing the dedicated students and professionals who contribute to these advancements.

Science and Technology Week 2019 is scheduled to hold April 8–12 and here’s the schedule of events:

Monday, April 8, 2019: Professional Development Dinner

This event will teach attendees formal dining skills and conversational practices for interviews and work settings. Students will also meet College of Applied Science and Technology alumni.

Time: 5–6 p.m.: Mocktail and mingle hour; 6 pm: Dinner and presentation

Cost: $20 per student

Venue: Brown Ballroom, Bone Student Center

Registration: Students can register for this event here. Registered Student Organizations and/or academic departments can purchase seats or students may register individually.

Please note that registration will be open to the campus community after March 8, 2019. Currently, registration is only open to College of Applied Science and Technology faculty, staff, and students.

Wednesday, April 10, 2019: Keynote Address by Temple Grandin

Temple Grandin, Ph.D., is considered the most accomplished and well-known adult with autism in the world.  She is the author of Thinking in Pictures: My Life with Autism, among others. Her books Animals in Translation and Animals Make Us Human were both New York Times bestsellers. Her book, Emergence: Labeled Autistic, stunned the world because, until its publication, most professionals and parents assumed that an autism diagnosis was virtually a death sentence to achievement or productivity in life.  Her life story was made into an HBO feature film starring Claire Danes. The movie received seven Emmy awards, a Golden Globe, and a Peabody Award.

Dr. Grandin is sought after globally to speak about her experiences with autism, cattle handling and the humane treatment of animals.  Her TED talk “The world needs all kinds of minds,” has been viewed by over 4.8 million people. Learn more about Temple Grandlin here.

A book signing will immediately follow the lecture.

Thursday, April 11, 2019: Academy of Achievement Induction Ceremony

Join us to celebrate CAST alumni during their induction to the Academy of Achievement. The Academy brings together alumni who are thought leaders in their fields and who serve as an inspiration to others with similar career paths.

Time: 8:30–9:30 a.m. – Coffee hour

9:30 a.m. – Induction ceremony

10:30 a.m. – Brunch

Cost: Free and open to the public

Venue: Hancock Stadium Club Room

N.B: Bruch is an invitation-only event.

Friday, April 12, 2019: Women in Leadership

Did you know seven out of eight CAST departments graduate female students into male-dominated fields? Join us to have conversations about career success with successful CAST alumni.

Keynote speaker: Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Jan Murphy.

Cost: $15 per student; $30 per professional

Time: 8.30 am

Venue: Hancock Stadium Club Room

Registration: Please register by Friday, March 29 at this link. Currently, registration is only open to College of Applied Science and Technology faculty, staff, and students. However, registration will be open to the campus community after March 8, 2019.

Friday, April 12, 2019, at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, April 13, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m – Gamma Phi Circus

Gamma Phi delivers an action-packed, high-energy, live-entertainment spectacle for its audiences. Gamma Phi’s acts showcase feats of strength and derring-do laced with mystery, prompting the age-old question: “How did they do that?”

Wednesday, April 24, 2019 – Neon at Night 5K Fun Run (this event is not during Science and Technology Week)

This will be fun! Enjoy a 5K run through Illinois State’s campus at night. This event is co-sponsored by CAST and Campus Recreation.

Time: 8:00 p.m.

Venue: Student Fitness Center (Race will start and end at the Student Fitness Center)

Cost: $15 for ISU Students, $20 for ISU Faculty/Staff and Community. Beginning April 10, the entry fee will increase to $20 for ISU Students, $25 for ISU Faculty/Staff and Community.
