Illinois State student-athletes set a new semester departmental grade-point average (GPA) record of 3.31 during the Spring 2019 semester, topping the previous mark of 3.24 set during the previous two semesters, and five teams tied or beat their previous team GPA records as announced by Assistant Athletics Director for Academics and Life Skills Joe Klausner

“Seeing these impressive numbers earned by our student-athletes in the classroom illustrates that our students are buying into the academics and athletics culture we expect of our Redbirds,” Klausner said. “Clearly, these numbers are not possible without the tremendous support from the leadership team, athletics advisors, compliance/student services office, instructors, and many others behinds the scenes. I challenged the staff at the Karin L. Bone Athletics Study Center to foster meaningful relationships with the student-athletes we serve, and I believe the results are clearly showing how this is having a profound impact. The tireless efforts in the classroom by our student-athletes should not be overlooked, as they are the ones putting in the work each and every day. Earning a new departmental GPA record is tremendous and shows our student-athletes are going to compete in all aspects of their lives.”

ISU’s women’s programs combined for a 3.58 cumulative GPA, topping the previous high of 3.54, and the Illinois State men’s teams combined to earn a 3.08 GPA to set a new department standard. Soccer (3.82), women’s cross country (3.71), women’s basketball (3.67), men’s track and field (3.11) and football (3.01) all set team GPA semester records as well, while the soccer team (3.82) and men’s tennis team (3.48) were the team GPA award winners for highest marks among the women’s and men’s programs, respectively.

A total of 294 Redbird student-athletes (of 392 total) were named to the AFNI Honor Roll, accounting for 75 percent of the group, including every member of the women’s basketball and soccer teams. Additionally, a total of 93 student-athletes posted perfect 4.0 GPAs during the spring semester, just short of the record of 96 from this past fall.
