Criminal justice sciences major Scott Allen wins scholarship to Washington, D.C.
Every year, the College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST) gives students an incredible opportunity to intern with a recognized institution in Washington, D.C. Students from different majors are selected and all their living expenses covered by CAST as they gain top-notch work experience to prepare them for their careers.
Last year, interior design major Bailey Lushina interned at IA Interior Architects and related the new confidence she found in herself. In her words, “I will walk into the next job knowing that I am capable.” Interns in the past have enjoyed the experience of living and working in a big city with numerous fun activities.
For criminal justice sciences major Scott Allen, it was a summer well spent with the Environmental Protection Agency, Office of the Inspector General, specifically in the Operations Support Division in the Office of Investigations. Allen was responsible for sorting case files, gathering and filtering unredacted documents for further investigation. Allen recalls the favorite part of his internship experience to be working with his supervisor.
“He was incredibly nice and helpful, and introduced me to the various other divisions that I was able to familiarize myself with and made me feel at home in Washington, D.C.,” Allen said.
This experience comes with the thrill of living in a big city and for some of our students, it’s the first time. Allen got to live in an apartment for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed his stay in Washington. He also maximized the networking opportunities available and connected with interns from all over the country, which ultimately made his experience a better one.
Finally, Allen shares a piece of advice for prospective applicants of the CAST Washington, D.C. Scholarship, “Start looking for internships early and have a solid government resume. You can find a lot of opportunities on USAJOBS.gov but you can also only get so far with a personal resume. A government resume is crucial.”
