Winfred Avogo, Illinois State University associate professor of sociology, will present the talk “Early marriage, cohabitation, and childbearing: Contextual determinants in West Africa” at noon Friday, November 1, in Schroeder Hall room 206.

The prevalence of child marriage in West Africa is one of the highest in the global south. Yet, much of what is known about the harmful effects of early marriage and why it persists comes from research on South Asia. Adopting life-course family development perspectives on adolescent sexuality, Avogo presents linkages between the timing of union formation and childbearing across multiple countries with high rates of child marriage.

This event is free and open to the public.
