Paddy McShane, a professor from the University of Portland, will present the talk “Why it’s good to give moral testimony” as part of the Department of Philosophy Colloquia series at 5 p.m. Thursday, October 17, in Stevenson Hall, room 132.

McShane will argue for the distinctive value that giving moral testimony has for testifiers. This value comes to light when the fact that testifiers are not just seen as potential evidential sources (as they’ve predominantly been treated in the moral testimony literature), but also as moral agents. McShane asserts that by paying attention to the fact that testifiers are socially embedded moral agents, society can position itself to see that giving moral testimony can serve to counteract oppressive constructions of identity.
