Every month the Administrative/Professional (A/P) Council highlights an A/P staff member through a series of questions as another way for the Illinois State community to connect. This month readers can get to know Dillon Maher, communications coordinator for the Office of Admissions.

As communication coordinator for the Office of Admissions, what are your responsibilities?

My team and I handle all the marketing and communication we do at the University to recruit domestic, undergraduate future Redbirds.

How long have you been an employee at Illinois State?

I’ve been working in Admissions since the summer of 2017—just a few short weeks after graduating!

What do you love most about working at Illinois State?

I had a great time here in Normal as a student, and I love that my job lets me share all the things I love about Illinois State University with prospective students. In a way, I get to help those students fall in love with Illinois State University like I did.

When you’re not working, what are you most likely doing?

When I’m not working, you’ll find me reading a good book or walking my dog, Henry.

What is your favorite spot on campus?

My favorite spot on campus is a specific cluster of trees in front of Edwards Hall that are perfect for hanging my hammock.

What is one thing people would not know about you?

People are often surprised at how few movies I’ve seen. There are tons of “classics” that I haven’t seen. If you run into me, I’m always looking for movie recommendations.

What quote most inspires you? Why?

When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” – Mr. Rogers.

I grew up watching Mr. Rogers at my grandma’s house every day. Recently, I read his biography and was reminded at how significant he was to me. I love the idea that, when so many things feel like they’re going wrong, there are still people who are trying to make the world a better place.
