Illinois State will continue to recognize its founding in February as the University does each year, and this year’s celebrations will include some changes made as a result of campus conversations that coincided with the update of Illinois State’s strategic planning process.

Variations beginning in February 2020 include moving the Faculty/Staff Appreciation Luncheon from its traditional spot at Homecoming. The Chili cookoff was reinstated this fall to allow faculty and staff to come together at Homecoming and moving the luncheon will allow another time for faculty and staff to reconvene and celebrate.

“I am pleased to continue the tradition of honoring our Redbird family members with the Faculty/Staff Appreciation Luncheon and gratified that this event can highlight the exemplary service of those who serve the University,” said President Larry Dietz.

Now referred to as The Founding Celebration, events will take place February 19-20.

Wednesday, February 19, will feature the Faculty/Staff Appreciation Luncheon, which will also provide a venue for the University’s service and achievement awards.

Thursday, February 20, will feature the Loyalty Circle Breakfast, Bell Ringing ceremony, Honorary Doctorate Investiture, and the Alumni Awards Banquet.

During the Faculty/Staff Appreciation Luncheon, Years of Service honorees as well as Civil Service and Administrative/Professional scholarship recipients will be recognized. Awards to be presented at the luncheon include:

  • Outstanding University Service Award
  • Service Initiative Awards
  • David A. Strand Diversity Achievement Award
  • Environmental Stewardship Award
  • Civil Service Distinguished Service Award
  • Administrative/Professional Distinguished Service Award
  • Administrative/Professional Emerging Leader Award
  • Civil Service and Administrative/Professional Esprit de Corps
  • TEAM Excellence
  • Stan and Sandy Rives Excellence in Undergraduate Education Award

Teaching award recipients will now be honored at the Teaching and Learning Symposium presented by the Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology in January. Research and advising award recipients will be honored at events later in the spring semester through the Office of the Provost.

More details of The Founding Celebration will be forthcoming on the Presidential and Trustee Event’s webpage.
