This year’s Science and Technology Week is cancelled due to the COVID-19 situation and the Illinois governor’s ban on events with over 250 people. The health and safety of our students, faculty, staff, and audience members is always our top priority. 

It’s been 20 years! The College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST) is proud to announce the 20th Science and Technology Week, aimed at celebrating advancements in science and technology. This edition is filled with activities connecting students with the best of minds in science and technology.

Science and Technology Week 2020 is scheduled to hold April 13-17 and here’s the schedule of events:

Monday, April 13: Hidden Figures movie screening

The College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST) is inviting you to join us as we watch Hidden Figures, the true story of the black women mathematicians at NASA who helped fuel some of America’s greatest achievements in space. Starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae, the movie showcases a visionary trio of women that crossed all racial and gender lines and inspired generations.

The movie is adapted from Margot Lee Shetterly’s NYT bestseller Hidden Figures which encompasses the true story of the black women mathematicians at NASA who helped fuel some of America’s greatest achievements in space. In talks, Shetterly celebrates these unsung heroes, teasing out issues of race, gender, science, and innovation against the backdrop of WWII and the Civil Rights Era.

Tuesday, April 14: Hidden Figures author, Margot Lee Shetterly, to speak for 20th annual Science and Tech Week

To help celebrate the 20th anniversary of Science and Technology Week at Illinois State University, best-selling author of the book, Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race, Margot Lee Shetterly will give a keynote address

CAST Impact Day

Students, faculty, and staff are invited to join in a day of service to local schools by reading books to elementary school students that showcase CAST disciplines.

Thursday, April 16: Academy of Achievement

Celebrate CAST alumni during their induction to the Academy of Achievement. The Academy brings together alumni who are “thought leaders” in their fields and who serve as an inspiration to others with similar career paths.

    • 9:30 a.m., induction ceremony (free and open to the public)

Friday, April 17: Women in Leadership Conference

The College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST) is inviting you to the Women in Leadership event. The Women in Leadership conference involves activities focused on professional development. Along with the keynote speaker, there’ll be a panel discussion about the women in the workplace and participants will have the opportunity to ask questions. We will also have a session focused on networking tips as well as interactive sessions for students.

Did you know that seven out of eight CAST departments graduate female students into male-dominated fields? Join us to have conversations about career success with successful CAST alumni. Keynote speaker is Dr. Cara Rabe-Hemp, associate dean of the College of Applied Science and Technology.
