Distinguished Professor Ali Riaz has been quoted by the German international broadcaster DW in a report on the recent developments in the relationship between Bangladesh and India and the growing influence of China in the region.

The DW report  ‘Can China and Pakistan profit as Bangladesh turns from India?’ also highlights the recent calls between Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan and Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

The report suggests that the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act of India, which is alleged to be discriminatory to Muslims, has strained the longstanding close relationship. It is widely reported that Bangladesh is  gradually shifting towards China.

Riaz said it is still too early to determine if Bangladesh’s shift towards China will be permanent, or if Prime Minister Hasina is trying to send a message to India.

“Is she sending a message to New Delhi to renegotiate the terms of the relationship or is she trying to satisfy the growing anti-Indian sentiment in Bangladesh to benefit politically?” said Riaz. “Either way, Beijing benefits.”
