Black Girl Code will hold a Black Solidarity March & Vigil at 6 p.m. Monday, August 24, in front of Cook Hall on the Illinois State University Quad. Masks are required.
The peaceful protest and vigil will honor the Black women who have been victims of police brutality, including Rekia Boyd, Sandra Bland, Breonna Taylor, Atatiana Jefferson, and many others. “The vigil is our way to celebrate the lives of the individuals that were lost as well as let the Black women on campus know that they are not alone in the trials and tribulations they face,” said Black Girl Code President Rose Sammons.
The student-led organization hopes the event will make the ISU community aware of the #BlackLivesMatter movement and the impact it has on ISU’s Black student population. The mission of Black Girl Code is to focus on Black liberation and elevating the voices of Black women. “Black Girl Code’s sole mission statement is to give Black women on campus a safe space to vent about their issues and provide them a community at a historically white institution,” said Sammons.
