The Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) is encouraging Redbirds to remain engaged in the political process by watching the presidential inauguration.
Students are invited to join other college students from around the country for a live, virtual viewing and conversation during the inauguration. Join via Discord at 11:00 a.m. CST on Wednesday, January 20. The platform offers campus channels and general chat channels. The event is co-sponsored by the Dean of Students Office.
“The peaceful transition of power from the incumbent president to the present-elect is a prominent feature of American democracy,” said Harriett Steinbach assistant director at CCE. “We wanted to create space, even if it is just virtually, for our students to see that transition and talk about it.”
Resources on past presidential inaugurations and an inauguration activity for students can be found on the CCE website. CCE staff will also be passing out pocket-sized copies of the Constitution on campus on Tuesday, January 19, and Wednesday, January 20, in celebration of the inauguration events.
National inauguration discussion for faculty, staff, and students
Redbirds are also invited to join faculty, staff, and students from across the country on Thursday, January 21, from 11 a.m. to Noon CST for a national discussion to debrief and discuss the inauguration.
Designed to reach across differences and create a space for discourse, this national facilitated dialogue is based on the fundamental value of the pursuit of knowledge for the public good. The American Association of State Colleges and Universities’ American Democracy Project will provide access to articles covering the inauguration and use those for guided questions and prompts for a lively conversation.
