Illinois State University’s Latin American and Latino/a Studies will host a talk titled “Why Do Hispanics Spend More Time in Local Jails Than Whites?” from 3-4 p.m. Thursday, April 8 on Zoom.

Dr. Frank Beck and Alexis Swanson of the Stevenson Center for Community and Economic Development will share research supported by McLean County and the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council as well as data about experiences of Hispanic people when they are arrested in McLean County.

“This talk serves as part of an ongoing and necessary conversation about ethnicity and race and the criminal justice system in America,” said Director of Latin American and Latino/a Studies Dr. Maura Toro-Morn.

The talk will explore how Hispanics are more likely to have negative encounters with law enforcement, and often face questions about their immigration status during encounters with law enforcement.

The talk will be held on Zoom here.
