Aburoo Due Creative Productions, led by Illinois State University Professor of Ethnomusicology Ama Oforiwaa Aduonum, will perform Walking with My Ancestors: Cape Coast Castle at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 8, in the Kemp Recital Hall of Illinois State University.

Walking With My Ancestors: Cape Coast Castle is an award-winning one-woman theatrical, musical, and dance performance. It charts the painful return of a black mother, Ama Oforiwaa Aduonum, who seeks guidance from the spirits of her ancestors at former dungeons for enslaved Africans in Ghana’s Cape Coast Castle. She discovers some truths, fear, and wisdom as she shares the depths of pain and celebration and communes with the spirits of her ancestors. This ritual journey connects the present and the past, as it leads to revelation and reconciliation.

The performance is based on original, first-hand research conducted at the former dungeons by Aduonum.
