On Wednesday March 23, 2022, from noon–1 p.m. Central Time, the Spring 2022 International Seminar Series, ISU International Engagement, will feature Dr. Wouter Van Alebeek, Illinois State University interim director of Academic Programs at INTO ISU. Van Alebeek will give an overview of student services at Illinois State, then moderate a panel discussion with international students Benita Mukuna, Jackson Omushien, and Eduard Winner. This free Zoom webinar is open to the public with advance registration.

Van Alebeek recently started as interim director of Academic Programs at INTO ISU. In this role, he leads an excellent team of academic professionals who are here to teach and support the academic endeavors of students in the academic English or pathway program at Illinois State.

Before his role as interim director, Van Alebeek served as the assistant director of Student Experience at INTO ISU, where he oversaw all non-academic student support services for international students who are enrolled in academic English and pathway programs. Prior to joining Illinois State University, Alebeek served as the program director for an intensive English program at Western Kentucky University.

Van Alebeek earned his Ed.D. in educational leadership in 2017 and a Master of Arts in organizational leadership in 2011, both from Western Kentucky University. In addition, he earned a certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). He has taught leadership and ESL courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Van Alebeek was born and raised in the Netherlands and spent three years as an international student in the United States.

Van Alebeek will be joined by three student panelists: Benita Mukuna, a junior from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Africa, studying political communication; Jackson Omushien, a graduate student from Kenya studying applied economics; and Eduard Winner, a senior from Israel studying political science as well as peace and conflict resolution.

The International Seminar Series is presented by the Office of International Studies and Programs and features a theme each semester. The spring 2022 series, ISU International Engagement, is focused on the wide variety of international activities that connect the Illinois State community to others around the world.
