On March 24, 2022, the Illinois State University Model U.N. team, which is representing Timor-Leste at the National Model U.N. conference, had the opportunity to meet with the permanent representative of Timor-Leste to the United Nations, Ambassador Karlito Nunes.

During their conversation, Nunes gave students a glimpse into the top priorities and current work that Timor-Leste is focusing on within the U.N. Students asked questions about a variety of topics as part of their preparation for the National Model U.N. competition taking place in New York City in April. The conversation covered topics ranging from challenges that small island states like Timor-Leste face to Timor-Leste’s policy priorities in the areas of infrastructure, human rights, gender equality, climate change, and education.

Timor-Leste is a young nation celebrating 20 years of independence in 2022, and Nunes highlighted the country’s commitment to maintaining strong democratic values. Additionally, Nunes noted the immense pride he feels in being able to represent his country as an international diplomat.

The Model U.N. team left the conversation with a deeper understanding of Timor-Leste’s current goals and policies.
