Professor and Chair of Politics and Government Dr. T.Y. Wang was interviewed by Morning Wave in Busan, a daily English news program in Busan, Korea, featuring current affairs. In the interview, Wang described that the relationship between China and Taiwan has been cold and tense since 2016. During the past two years, Chinese leaders doubled down on their military pressure and repeatedly sent warplanes deeper into Taiwan’s air space.

Observers worry that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine may embolden Beijing leaders to use military force against Taiwan. However, Wang indicated that Russia’s invasion has gone poorly and has shown how difficult an attack on Taiwan would be. Russia’s experience also suggests that China is likely to face coordinated economic sanctions from the international community and possible military intervention from the United States.
