The Civil Service Council will feature a civil service employee at Illinois State University each month to highlight an exceptional colleague and the outstanding work being done on campus! This month get a chance to learn about and applaud Carla Dietsch from the Office of the Comptroller.

What is your position on campus and how long have you been with the University?

I am an accountant III in the Comptroller’s Business Office. I’ve worked in the Business Office for 15 years.

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

There are many rewards. I work with wonderful individuals in my office and across campus. I also enjoy learning. The last year has been a learning year, which I appreciate, as it has allowed me the opportunity to help others when needed. It is very rewarding to be able to pitch in when coworkers need assistance and help others learn a new skill. While I don’t work directly with students, I really enjoy the volunteer opportunities to interact with them like the house calls program through University Housing.

What are your hobbies or favorite pastimes?

I love traveling. My husband and I like to find hiking trails wherever we go. I also like taking photos. We were finding it difficult to figure out what we wanted to hang in rooms of our home when we realized we have many beautiful photos of where we have been hiking. Now, our walls are decorated with nature photos that hold a memory for us. I also enjoy participating in Illinois State University’s Homecoming campus decorating. It’s nice to be able to be creative in a typically non-creative occupation.

What else would you like others to know about you or your time at Illinois State?

Illinois State University provided me with a great education and has also provided a wonderful place to use those skills. I look forward to starting more training sessions soon. It’s wonderful to see or hear the ‘a ha!’ moment of understanding during a training session or phone call. Thank you, fellow Redbirds, for your patience, kindness, and opportunities!

More about Carla from Lisa Haas, chief accountant, Office of the Comptroller:

I have worked with Carla since she came to ISU in 2008. Carla has been a very positive and fun influence in our office from Day One making people smile and laugh. Working with travel, she has met lots of people from many different departments and has always helped people understand the travel rules that apply to their trips. She has done travel training for numerous areas to share her knowledge and represents ISU on the Travel Review Board. She is dedicated to improving processes and always looks for ways to streamline—do things better, less manually. She is always happy to help in any way she can. She has picked up and learned new duties when people have left or during the pandemic to help our office continue to operate smoothly. Being a crafty person, she spearheads our Homecoming decorating each year, and although she doesn’t enjoy cooking, her husband contributes great food to our office for food days and birthdays. She also checks in on people to make sure they are doing OK when she knows they are going through tough times and is involved with mission trips through her church. She is a truly giving and caring person who we are lucky to have in our office and a great asset to the University as a whole.
