National Voter Registration Day (NVRD), which will be celebrated on September 20 this year, is a nonpartisan civic holiday celebrating our democracy. Organizations across the country will recognize this day by registering eligible voters in preparation for Election Day.
In celebration of NVRD, the Voter Engagement Coalition has mobilized a campuswide effort to register and inform students ahead of the 2022 elections. During the 2020 presidential election cycle, 82% of Illinois State University registered to vote, and during the 2018 midterm election, 68% of Illinois State students registered to vote. The coalition has set a goal of 80% of Illinois State students registered to vote in 2022.
Over the course of the week, Student Government Associate will be in the Bone Student Center and on the Quad registering students to vote. Redbirds can stop by the table to get more information about the election, register to vote, and get election giveaways to celebrate NVRD. Illinois State University uses a system called TurboVote to help walk you through the quick and easy process to check your voter registration address, register, or get reminders.
“I urge students to become involved in the democratic process by voting,” Student Body Vice President Grant Chassy said. “Through the Student Government Association’s Civic Engagement Committee, along with coordinated efforts with the University’s Center for Civic Engagement, Student Government will support student voters.”
On September 22 from 1–3 p.m. on the Quad, the Student Government Association will host a Backyard BBQ for students to enjoy free food, music, and games. Students are encouraged to participate in this special event.
Comprehensive election information is available in the Redbird Voter Guide.
