At the beginning of the fall semester, Professor Tom McClure gave an in-service presentation to the Illinois State University Admissions staff concerning affirmative action.

His talk first presented the historical background of affirmative action in the United States. He then traced the Supreme Court’s affirmative action jurisprudence in the contexts of colleges and universities. Finally, he discussed the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard.

Prior to becoming a professor at Illinois State, McClure was a trial attorney. He litigated housing and employment discrimination cases on behalf of clients that claimed they were victims of various types of discrimination, such as race, sex, disability, marital status, and religion. Early in his career, he convinced a federal jury in Peoria that the Illinois Department of Corrections discriminated against an assistant warden based on race.
