Letter from the Civil Service Council Chair, Quanisha Kumi-DarfourGreetings Civil Service Colleagues, It is my pleasure to serve as your newly elected Civil Service Council Chair. In this capacity, I aim to have the utmost transparency and be committed to understanding the experiences and needs of civil service employees. All civil service staff are welcome to attend the Civil Service Council Meetings which are held on Zoom from noon to 1 pm on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month. More information about the council along with meeting information can be found on the Civil Service website https://cscouncil.illinoisstate.edu/.
In November, two roundtable informational sessions will be held regarding the proposed merging of Civil Service (CS) and Administrative/Professional (A/P) councils into one staff council. Each council serve as key shared governance bodies representing the staff of Illinois State University since 1959 and 1976, respectively. To provide transparency and to give all A/P and CS employees an opportunity to understand and weigh in on the proposed merger, please attend one or both sessions. Release time may be granted based on operational needs of the department.

Civil Service Scholarship Applications are openScholarship applications will be open from October 1, 2023, and close with a December 31, 2023 deadline. Civil Service ISU Scholarships and Civil Service Non-ISU ScholarshipsThe two scholarships for Civil Service staff dependents were created in 1965. Their purpose is to award financial assistance to dependents of Illinois State University Civil Service employees. The student’s achievements and needs are both taken into consideration. They are made possible through funds presented by the Illinois State University Foundation and the Civil Service Council’s fundraising activities. Carl Johanson ScholarshipsAl and Elaine Goldfarb endowed the Carl Johanson Scholarship for Elaine’s father. The recipients must be an Illinois State University Civil Service employee working towards an ISU degree. Employees only taking courses one semester per school year are also encouraged to apply. The Civil Service Scholarship committee will announce the award recipients in March 2024.
