Civil Service Council Call for Volunteers to Serve 

Illinois State University’s Civil Service Council seeks volunteers to serve on various committees to support and benefit Civil Service Staff. The Council provides non-academic staff with a voice on campus and plays an important role in Illinois State’s shared governance structure.  

Civil Service Awards Committee 

Seeks 3-5 volunteers. 
The committee will meet from September through January. The schedule will be set based on the committee’s availability between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
This committee will select the winner(s) of the Civil Service Council Distinguished Service Award(s). Based on the supervisor’s approval, this position will entail approximately five hours of volunteer time or five hours of work. Please indicate interest to Matt Wing at mjwing@IllinoisState.edu. Note: Volunteering does not guarantee an appointment to the committee. Nominators or nominees for awards are excluded. Appointment will also be contingent upon supervisor and HR approval.   

Civil Service Scholarships Committee

Seeks 4-6 volunteers. 
The committee will meet from January through March. The schedule will be set based on the committee’s availability between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The Civil Service Council awards a Civil Service Scholarship to students whose parents are ISU Civil Service employees, a Civil Service Scholarship for students of Civil Service employees who attend other universities, and a Carl Johanson Scholarship to Civil Service employees who are currently attending Illinois State University to further their careers. Based on the supervisor’s approval, this position will entail approximately six to eight hours of volunteer time or six to eight hours of work.  Please indicate interest to Beth Porter at eaporte4@IllinoisState.edu. Note: Volunteering does not guarantee an appointment to the committee. Staff applying for the scholarship or with children applying for the scholarships are excluded. Appointment will also be contingent upon supervisor and HR approval. 

Graphic Design Volunteer 

Seeks 1-2 volunteers.
The volunteers would serve on an as-needed basis and work with the Civil Service Council chair of marketing until June 30 of this year.
The volunteer(s) would serve on an ongoing Civil Service marketing committee and may help with social media and University Calendar postings. Volunteer must be able to use graphic design software such as Canva, Adobe Illustrator, and/or Photoshop.
These positions will entail volunteer time or work hours, depending on the supervisor’s approval. Appointment will also be contingent upon supervisor and HR approval. 

Marketing Committee Volunteer 

Seeks 1-2 volunteers.
The volunteers would serve on an as-needed basis and work with the Civil Service Council Chair of Marketing until June 30, 2025.
The volunteer(s) would serve on an ongoing Civil Service marketing committee and help promote Civil Service events, the OpenLine Newsletter, social media, and University Calendar postings.
These positions will entail volunteer time or work hours, depending on the supervisor’s approval. Saljook Khan

The Civil Service Council will feature a Civil Service employee at Illinois State University each month to highlight an exceptional colleague and the outstanding work being done on campus. This month, learn about and applaud Assignments IT Tech Associate Saljook Khan.

Perhaps the most important function of the Staff Council is its role in shared governance at Illinois State. The CS and A/P Councils provide representatives for many university groups and committees so that staff make their voices heard. One of the core justifications for the merger is to produce a stronger, more unified staff voice in these venues. We now turn to where and how that voice is exercised.

Students of current Civil Service (CS) employees can apply for scholarships through the Civil Service Council. Applications will be open October 1-December 31, 2024.

Come say hello and grab a hot drink with members of the Civil Service (CS) and Academic/Professional (A/P) council members who serve you. The “grab and go” is Thursday, November 21, from noon to 1:30 p.m, in the Bone Student Center’s Spotlight Room. Beverages are free and no RSVP is required.
