The Civil Service Council will feature a Civil Service employee at Illinois State University each month to highlight an exceptional colleague and the outstanding work being done on campus. This month, learn about and applaud safety environmental compliance officer with Environmental Health and Safety, George Redell.

What is your position on campus and how long have you been with the University?

I am a safety environmental compliance officer with Environmental Health and Safety on campus. My main focus is to ensure university employees are following OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations and provide training as the OSHA standards require. I’ve worked at the University for almost 20 years.

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

That’s an easy question. The people I work with in EHS and throughout campus are great to work with. Applying to Illinois State University was one of the best life decisions I have ever made. I could not ask for a better place to work. I enjoy coming to work and working with other departments on campus.

What are your hobbies or favorite pastimes?

Over the last six years I having been playing soft tip darts, throwing in multiple leagues and tournaments throughout the state. I am also an avid collector of vinyl records. Listening to vinyl, I get a warm and authentic sound that brings me back to my youth.

What else would you like others to know about you or your time at ISU?

Personally, I enjoy cooking for my friends and family. Food is the one thing that helps bring everyone together. Professionally, working in the environmental, safety and health field really makes me feel like I’m making a difference. We at EHS are trying to provide a safe work and learning environment for everyone at ISU.

This is George Redell’s 20th year at ISU as an integral member of the Environmental Health and Safety team. His dedication, professionalism, and work ethic have left an indelible mark on the University. Having worked alongside George for his 20 years, I can personally attest to his unwavering commitment, expertise, and genuine passion for serving the ISU community.

As a technical specialist in occupational safety and health, George approaches every challenge with a positive attitude and determination to succeed. He displays remarkable creativity and resilience in handling complex situations while delivering outstanding services and solutions. His tenure is marked by numerous accomplishments and a steadfast commitment to the safety and well-being of all members within the ISU community; most recently, the implementation of a safety and compliance training platform for Facilities Services.

Beyond his professional duties, George’s altruism and sense of community are noteworthy. This is highlighted in donating his “darts” competition winnings to a community member that was dealing with illness and struggling to pay healthcare expenses. He also generously volunteered to drive a high school student from his local community in Pekin to Normal every weekday so the student could experience a one-of-a-kind education at University High School.
