The Illinois State University renovation of Schroeder Hall has earned the Pride in Partnership Outstanding Renovation Award from the State of Illinois and the Capital Development Board (CDB). Illinois State received a second Pride in Partnership award for Minority Business Enterprise/Female Business Enterprise Participation as a result of efforts by Siemens Building Technology, the building control contractor for the Schroeder Hall Renovation project.
The Outstanding Renovation Award was accepted by Richard Runner (pictured in the back row on the right), director of Facilities Planning, at a luncheon in Springfield on March 24. Award recipients included Illinois State University, Clark Dietz, Inc., BLDD Architects, Inc., IDEAL Environment, Felmley Dickerson Company, Wm. Masters, Inc., Dries Bros. Plumbing Company, A & R Mechanical Contractors, Inc., Du-Mont Company, F. E. Moran, Inc. Fire Protection, Siemens Building Technology, LVI Environmental and CDB Project Manager Eddie Frazier.
Schroeder Hall is home to the Criminal Justice Sciences, History, Politics and Government, Social Work and Sociology-Anthropology departments. The $19 million renovation took two years to complete and upgraded the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems of both wings of the building as well as replaced heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, electrical distribution and lighting systems, fire alarm system and domestic water and sewer systems.
The facility was also modified externally to resemble other Illinois State Georgian buildings and to eliminate the single-paned windows, which let in cold air throughout the winter and increased pressure on the heating system. Internally all hallways and classrooms were removed and then rebuilt, resulting in improved classroom facilities, better facilities for offices and nicer department suites.
Schroeder Hall was dedicated in 1957 and the Schroeder Hall Annex in 1965. Named for Herman Schroeder, professor of educational psychology, dean and two-time acting president at Illinois State Normal University, the building houses 42 classrooms with a capacity for 2,383 students and encompasses 104,000 square feet.
