Remember when Illinois State (Normal) University had Big Four Dances, most classes were held in Old Main, students gathered in front of the bulletin board at the Four Corners of Old Main, and everyone pretty much knew everyone else on campus? Jane (Hoffman) Schleeter ’56 remembers and is looking forward to reminiscing with old classmates at the Class of 1956’s 50th reunion May 18-20 and being inducted into the Half Century Club at the annual spring event.
“I wouldn’t miss it for anything,” Schleeter said. “The crowds and action that went on in the halls made campus the social place to be. It was all very special to me because my parents had been at Illinois State, and my brother was already there. I totally miss all the meetings to plan campus activities. Being president of the Women’s League when I was a senior capped all the previous years of committee work. Meeting lots of students and sharing ideas to make campus the place to be, living in Fell Hall, the Cage and much more—I remember it all. I could go on, but I’ll wait until I see some of my old friends, and we can visit and talk about their memories.”
Those interested in joining Schleeter can register for the event or view a complete list of activities by clicking on Reunion. Tee times at the University Golf course are available for alumni on Saturday morning. For more information, contact the Alumni Relations Office at (309) 438-2586 or toll-free at 1-(800) 366-4478.
Members of the Class of 1956 will be inducted into the Half Century Club at dinner on Thursday and join the Half Century Club for a full day of activities on Friday. Special recognition will be given to members of the Classes of 1951, 1946, 1941, 1936 and 1931, who are all celebrating landmark reunions.
The Illinois State Normal University Half Century Club honors all alumni whose classes graduated 50 or more years ago. There are no dues to belong. The annual spring program gives alumni an opportunity to catch up with classmates, make new acquaintances and learn what’s new at Illinois State. The May program will showcase the Mennonite College of Nursing and includes a tour of Edwards Hall.
