Alumni Relations (AR) welcomed two new staff members to their office, Angie Coughlin and Sheila Hawk, in August.
Coughlin will work on event planning and coordination for special programs and events. She is the AR liaison for the Alumni Association Awards, Homecoming, Half Century Club and reunions.
Hawk is a program coordinator for the annual Homecoming parade and special events. Hawk’s time is shared with University Events.
Coughlin previously worked at State Farm Insurance in the publications area and at Heartland Community College in the community education area. She said the AR job appealed to her as an active University High School alumna. She has served on the University High School Alumni Association Board as secretary and currently is co-editor of the Pioneer newsletter. “I have enjoyed working with this group tremendously since it allows me the opportunity to interact with others who share my pride and dedication to U-High,” Coughlin said, adding that she enjoys interacting with other alumni and working on events like Homecoming.
Hawk is an Illinois State University alumna, graduating in 2006 with a degree in recreation management. “I have a passion for events, and know that is what I was meant to do,” Hawk said. “My favorite thing about Illinois State is the opportunities it offers to all. All you have to do is get involved.”
Hawk’s collegiate experience in recreation helped her with planning events. She learned the proper planning stages to ensure a successful event along with the ability to anticipate problems and think though the flow of events. Hawk said the Homecoming parade has worked well in the past, but they are looking to expand it this year with more student groups, departments and community business and organizations.
