The nationally-ranked Illinois State football team hosts Indiana State Oct. 13 at Hancock Stadium for Homecoming 2007.  Head coach Denver Johnson and the Redbirds are led by seniors Luke Drone and Kye Stewart.

Drone is on pace to become the most prolific passer in Redbird history and is one of only 16 players in the country to be considered on the watch list for the 2007 Walter Payton Award, presented to the top offensive player at the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level.

Stewart, the top returning tackler in the Gateway Football Conference, is the preseason favorite to claim the league’s defensive player of the year award, a honor that a Redbird has received in each of the last five seasons.  He is also one of 16 players nationally to be considered for the 2007 Buck Buchanan Award, an accolade presented to the top FCS defender.

The game will be a key contest in Illinois State’s run for the Gateway Football Conference championship. The Redbirds have won eight of the last nine meetings against Indiana State, including a 70-28 offensive rout in 2005, the Sycamores last trip to Hancock Stadium.

In 2006, the largest attendance at Hancock Stadium in 35 years witnessed ISU defeat Southern Illinois during homecoming.  With 17,237 fans at last year’s game, tickets are sure to go fast.  Purchase tickets online at GoRedbirds.com, or call the Redbird Arena Ticket Office at 438-8000.

Illinois State is the only school in Illinois with players selected in each of the last three NFL Drafts.  The Redbirds have also set milestones in team grade-point average and community service hours.  This is a product the entire campus community can be proud of, so wear red and come out to Hancock Stadium to cheer on your Redbirds.
