In the following Q-and-A, senior Laura Scully shares some of her experiences as a philosophy major.
What have you enjoyed most about being a philosophy major at ISU?
The challenge of having to push myself in a way that I have never done before. Studying philosophy is hard work. Rising to this challenge makes the knowledge I have gained even more rewarding. I will forever have a place in my heart for Plato, Aristotle, Locke, Hume, and Kant.
If you had to take one—and only one—philosophy book or article to a desert island, which one would it be?
Plato’s Republic.
Do your friends and family know that you study philosophy?
Yes, and they all agree this was well suited for me as I’m told constantly that I live in my head—forever … thinking.
What other majors did you consider?
History and economics. I actually did a double major with political science being my first major.
What are you plans after graduation?
To continue studying philosophy on my own and possibly pursue a graduate degree in creative writing (follow in David Foster Wallace’s footsteps?).
