The Illinois State University Symphony Orchestra will perform Igor Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” at 8 p.m. Sunday, April 19, in the University’s Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall. Tickets for the concert are $10 for general admission, $8 for faculty/staff and $6 for students and seniors.
The concert program will also include “Introduction, Theme, and Variations for Clarinet and Orchestra” by Gioachino Rossini and Chen Gang’s “Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto.” Those works will feature performances by Illinois State Concerto-Aria Competition winners Colby Spengler, clarinet, and Wen-Chi Chiu, violin.
The performance of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring will feature nearly 100 musicians on stage under the baton of Glenn Block, Illinois State’s director of orchestras. As an introduction to the work, Kim Pereira, a professor in the School of Theatre and Dance, will deliver a poem by English poet Siegfried Sassoon describing the premiere performance of The Rite of Spring in 1913, an event that caused an uproar and near riot in the audience.
