Even though the warm weather is still upon us, summer is starting to wind down and move-in week is quickly approaching! You are just weeks away from the start of your college career and living away from home for the first time. Now what?
If you’re like me, then you are probably filled with questions about what you need to buy and bring. Here is a breakdown of what I brought with me to college and what I wish I knew I needed:
The essentials
Rain boots: The No. 1 thing I didn’t know was necessary to bring with me were rain boots. Yes, rain boots! When living at home you don’t do a lot of walking outside, but when you are at school you will find yourself walking all over campus in all kinds of weather. So, it is definitely important to be prepared. Guys, if galoshes aren’t your style, don’t worry, as there are plenty of alternatives.
Extension cords: Your residence hall room is going to be full of appliances. From a TV to a mini-fridge, to a printer and maybe even extra lights, chances are you will find yourself with more plugs than your outlets can handle. A simple solution is to bring a few extension cords and power strips between you and your roommate. The cords will make organizing your room much easier.
Easy-to-carry laundry hamper: The residence hall laundry rooms are either located in the basement or on the top level. This means that you will need to transport your laundry further than just down the hall. When shopping for a laundry basket, make sure that is easy to carry and that it will make it through the year. I made the mistake of purchasing a flimsy mesh bag, which tore within the first few months of the semester. Take a look at some great options.
Cleaning supplies: I really didn’t think that I would need more than some Clorox wipes to keep my room tidy, but I was wrong. I’m not saying that I am an extremely messy person, but when it came to keeping my room clean, Clorox wipes didn’t cut it. I would recommend investing in disinfecting spray, a dust rag, and glass cleaner. Worried about a broom or vacuum? Residence halls have both available for you to use for free.
These are just a few of the things that I wish I had known were necessary to have during freshman year. If you want to know more, check out your packing list provided by Illinois State for more information on what you should bring to the residence halls.
