Associate Professor Jennifer Howell joined the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at Illinois State in fall 2012. She completed her Ph.D. in Francophone studies at the University of Iowa in 2010 and specializes in alternate histories of the French Empire recounted by artists, writers, and filmmakers who live and work in the Francophone world, especially in North and West Africa, the Caribbean, and Vietnam.
Howell has traveled extensively throughout Francophone Europe (France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Monaco), Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal, Burkina Faso), and the Caribbean (Martinique and Guadeloupe). She shares her experiences with students so that they too will become responsible world travelers and, ultimately, world citizens.
She values foreign language education at Illinois State and looks forward each year to mentoring students committed to lifelong learning, sustainability, social justice, and global citizenship.
